Rincon Pollay, Uspantan, Depto. Quiche, Guatemala.
Laura brought a friend from the area to guide us to a forest on a finca called Rincon Pollay, 6.6 Km E (by rd) of Uspantan (15.36403°N, 90.82388°W [± 8m], 2008m elev). The area turned out to have only a short secondary forest with ~ four liquidamber trees. Gabriela got a B. archumataana out of a bank and we got 2 more out of the 4-5 bromeliads we opened. We only searched for ~30 min total, since the habitat was no good. We packed up and drove to Huehuetenango, where we met the owners of Finca Discansar. They were entirely uninterested in selling any of it as a reserve, but seemed to like the idea of a private reserve.

San Juan district area, Sierra de los Cuchumatanes, Depto. Huehuetenango, Guatemala.
Gabriela left by bus this morning to go back to Mexico. We drove to the Dendrothele archumataana type locality and met a local man who FUNDAECO had contacted. He took us to a town called Las Vegas on the Rio Quisil, 11.1 Km (by rd) from the highway. There was a forest with small oak trees and some larger pine trees. There were lots of small to medium sized bromeliads and lots of agaves; the forest seemed quite dry. We opened bromeliads from 11:00-13:00 and got 4 Electrohyde. We drove back to the type locality, but the owner told us that no oak forest remains in the area, so we gave up and drove to Barillas. At night, a series of mistakes led to a tissueing disaster. All the B. archumataana from 1/18 and 1/19 were mixed in a single jar of chloroxene and we couldn't tell which was which. I kept none and voided those numbers- a big waste.
