rito, Dec 2009 Journal Dec.19 Pena Verde area, Sierra de Juarez, Oaxaca, Mexico (cat) We drove down the road to San Almojo and continued on for a few km to an area with Pinus Chiapensis/Liquidamber forest, just like in Tlaxiatac Nigo. We searched in logs and leaf litter from 15:00-16:50. Conditions seemed great, but the only thing we found was a Cougar that lit up got along the road. We met a man who told us the forest had burned 15-20 years ago; given that there is no forest in the surrounding areas, this could explain the lack of success we had. Oh, the Tigers are just hard to find. We gave up and drove out to Cuitlan and on to Teotitlan to spend the night! It was fairly cold and foggy today; and a light rain (Chipi-Chipi) fell on us all day. Dec.28 Cuautlapam and Fortin de las Flores, Veracruz, Mexico I drove to Cuautlapam this morning and drove to the end of the road on the W side above the PEMEX. Searched from 11:30-13:15 in a shade cafetal, mostly under rocks and logs but also in bananas. Got 2 B. Rufescens, both in red bananas. Drove to western edge of Fortin and asked around until some people let me walk through their garden to a huge cafetal w/ tons of logs + red bananas on the S side of Av. I Sur. Searched 14:00-14:50 but got only 2 B. Rufescens in red bananas and 1 under a rock. Also saw a Sphingomorphus under a banana log. Searched briefly in a cafetal on the road to Huatusco and on the road from Fortin down to the bridge at the highway on the W side of town but the habitat wasn't very good at either site. I spent rest of day looking for a site to look tomorrow. Was cloudy in the morning with drizzle after 15:00. Stayed in Cidoba.
