Dec. 7
El Pozo, N of Berrizabal, Chiapas, Mexico
We woke up somewhat late and drove to Tuxtla, then on to Berrizabal.
Stopped at a friend of Antonio's house in the small village of Nista
Hermosa, 7.5 km from the edge of town. We searched in 3 sets of
bananas in town for ~30 min and got 3 Bolitoglossa that may be
B. occidentalis - they are quite large and rather dark. We then
stopped in the next settlement, Chichumac, 10.5 km from the edge of
Berrizabal, and searched in both red and green bananas for 30 min
until it got dark. Found 4 Bolitoglossa (all in red bananas); they are
smaller and lighter in color, and I would guess they are reflexens. The
area between these 2 sites is a forest (apparently secondary) that seems
pretty dry but apparently has some bromeliads. The contact zone between
the two species may be in this area. We drove on to El Pozo, the
cyclodactylus niger type locality. We searched from 18:40-19:40
but only found 1 Adelphicos and 4 Craugastor spp. The night
was dry and nearly cloudless, so conditions for finding amphurians
were poor. Antonio has looked here many times under all different
weather conditions, and believes this species is extinct. The habitat
is more fragmented than when I was here in 2007, but still
has some very big trees and lots of rocks with cracks and little
caves. We gave up and returned to Tuxtla.
