Puerto Solistahuacan area, Chiapas, Mexico
On Feb. 29, I drove to Juutla Gutierez, to meet Antonio Munoz and Nora Lopez, and we continued on to San Cristobal. Antonio and I drove to the top of Cerro Tzintchintzi. We searched on the roadbank with lights from 11:10-11:55, but it was extremely dry and we saw nothing.
Yesterday, Antonio went to work for most of the day, and then we drove to Puerto Nuevo Solistahuacan. This morning, we went to see the type locality of Cryptotriton alvarezdeltori in the "Selva Negra", below Puerto del Viento between Rincon Chamula and Rayon. There are even fewer trees than in March 2008, and more landslides; this area is pretty trashed, and has no decent forest left. We then tried to reach some forest above the villages of Juan Bragales and Cerrajal. Everyone told us the road was too bad for cars, so we wasted a ton of time finding a truck to take us there. Finally got one and took road from Puerto Nuevo to Chachapa, then up to Juan Bragales; the road was OK and my car could have made it. We walked uphill from town to the only area of forest around. It was mostly pine with small oak trees and many Bromeliads. Lots of logging has happened here. I found a small B. [illegible] in a Bromeliad shortly after we started searching around 14:15. We opened some Bromeliads, then spent a long time cutting a path across some overgrown regenerating vegetation to an area with pine and some oak trees and many Bromeliads, with a thick scrubby understory. We opened about 20 more Bromeliads but found nothing; could see better forest on next ridge. Had to stop searching around 16:20 to get our ride back to Puerto Nuevo. We searched in the type locality, Selva del Viento from ~21:30-22:30, but saw only Electrophyla ixil and Andis.
