Nov, Dec 2009 Journal Los Tuxtlas, Veracruz, Mexico Nov. 28 Left the DF around 6:30 yesterday and drove to Cordoba. Turned off just past Cordoba and passed through Amatlan, then headed 5 for ~9km to small town of Coatzalco. It was packed with banana plants, and I found a nice plot of land w/ coffee and tons of red bananas. I searched from 11:00-12:45 in great red bananas, leaf litter + under banana "logs"; found 2 B. reyesensis and a Smilica bandinii, all in banana plants. Both capitals in town and forested hillsides around town seemed great for salamanders, but I left to get to Catemaco. Arrived there, ate dinner & fell asleep exhausted (no sleep the night before). Woke up and drove N from Catemaco towards beaches. Looked for bananas but found almost none, driving all the way to UNAM field station. Worked my way back opening spikey bromeliads (~10) and checking bananas in town of So and along rd, but people were very touchy b/c it's a biosphere reserve. Finally found some red bananas (most in area were green) and got 2 B. reyesensis. Drove back to San Andres Tuxtla and took road N to Ruiz Cortines. Stopped in very rocky area of forest and searched for ~30 min w/o success. Continued on to just beyond high point on road and searched for ~20 min, before it got too dark. Found one adult Pseudoeurycea werleri under a big piece of bark on forest floor. Conditions were wet and I think I could have found more salamanders if I had more time. Drive to Coatzacoalcos to be closer to Tuxtla Autobay tomorrow.
