Sierra de los Cuchumatanes, Depto. Huehuetenango, Guatemala (cont.)
Aug. 12 ... a few B. rustata and 2 B. [illegible]. I learned the word for frog (peje) and salamander (uni) in Kanjobal.
We dropped our guide off in-town and drove just past Alder Pie de la Cuesta on the way to the microwave towers. We searched in a great roadbank from 14:00-14:45 and got 2 B. [illegible]. As far as I know, no one has collected them here since Larry Shurt, although they appear to be fairly common. We drove back to the [illegible] type locality and searched from 16:00-16:45. I pulled down the only easily accessible bromeliad and got 2 big B. rustata (didn't collect). B. [illegible] should still be at this spot, and bromeliads seem like the best bet to find it. I found a dead shrew on the trail (CRVA1324). Finally, we stopped at a side 3 km N of the junction of the Huehue-Barillas road and the road to Iglesia Santos Cuchumatlan. We searched under rocks in bunchgrass habitat, with some conifers, but found only 2 Mesaspis and 1 Scoloporus from 17:20-18:20.
O-P. rex used to be extremely abundant here. We drove to Huehuetenango, dropped Gustavo off (he has to be back at work tomorrow) and drove on to San Marcos, arriving late at night.
