MontaƱas de Cuiler, Depto. Huehuetenango, Guatemala (cont.)
ParaĆsos and Cija Blanca, where Lynch and Elias had stopped to
collect Dendrotriton raldii and B. lincolni in the forest above
the road. We parked and walked up a trail south from the road,
and started searching in bromeliads at 13:50. There are still some
huge trees left but parts of the forest have been logged, and it
wasn't as pristine as Elias described. We searched in bromeliads,
under logs and under rocks, and I found a snake (Silbon?)
under a big rock. Ted went uphill to search in logs and Carlos,
Austavo and I stayed together with the bromeliad cutter. At
~2300m elev., there were no more bromeliads and only secondary
forest. I found a B. lincolnii under a piece of wood and Austavo
found another big adult under a log. We searched under logs up
to ~2450m and then headed back down to where the bromeliads
were. The saw on the cutter broke, so we only could open the
bromeliads within reach, which were few. Carlos knocked a small one
down with the cutter handle and found a tiny Dendrotriton raldii.
We continued downhill but found no more Salamanders. I found
a Rana along the road, where we stopped searching at 15:00.
We drove down to the highway, but got there too late to find
anywhere to look for B. marathl. Stayed at Hotel Oasis (very nice)
in La Negilla (not so nice).
Total for day: 2 B. lincolnii
1 Dendrotriton raldii
1 Silbon
1 Rana
