Once again, we decided that searching in the forest by day would not yield results, so we spent the morning preparing specimens. It rained hard in the afternoon,
and we left around 17:00 with Ernst and quickly
walked to the mirador. Fed stayed behind to search along
the stream near the house. We passed through some beautiful cloud forest with huge trees and lots of moss, and heard a quetzal around 2400m. This forest appears quite different from the forest below in the amount of moss and number of bromeliads it has. We waited for dark at the mirador where you can see Coban (we saw clouds) and then started walking down slowly around 19:15. Although the forest was wet and conditions seemed excellent, we saw nothing but many Craugastor, of which we collected 8 adults. We stopped searching carefully at 22:00 and walked back to the house. Fed had searched for about two hours but saw nothing along the stream. I am surprised that we saw no salamanders besides B. helminchi here, especially given the good condition of the forest. It may be that the most diverse areas of the Sierra de Kuecan and Montanas de Malijay were at [illegible] to mid elevations (maybe 1300-2000m) and have now been completely converted to agriculture.
