Kinto, Dean 2008 Journal May 31 Dry forest near San Vicente, Dept. Zacapa, Guatemala We prepared specimens all morning and then drove to meet Daniel Ariano, the scientist at Zootropie who manages the Heloderma hordinum project in San Vicente. We drove out of town and up a river bed (dry) in the rain to a site with mixed dry forest and thorn scrub that he hopes to acquire for Heloderma conservation. The site has a mosaic of dry and thorn forest and appears to be in great condition. We then drove to a nearby site and rediscovered a Heloderma, "Sultan", to a mistnet ladder. It was spectacular to see this animal in the wild, even if we cheated a little by tracking it. We then walked back in the dark and drove back to Guatemala City. We caught a Bufo and an Aspidoscelis motaguae at the Heloderma site. June 1 Cerro Miramundo, Jalapa, Guatemala Fred, Gustavo Russo and I drove to Cerro Miramundo, Dept. Jalapa, arriving at 15:00 (it took a while to get organized this morning). We walked past the entrance in Miramundo to a nice oak forest. It had been logged in the past but many big trees with lots of moss and some Bromeliads were left. It was foggy, windy and rainy. We searched in logs (some very good) from 15:00-17:00 but found nothing.
