Fincas la Bendición, above Zacapa, Dept. Zacapa, Guatemala (cat.)
Jan. 16 ... We talked to the manager, Carlos Perez, and he told us that the owner, Am. Vicente Franco Leonardo, lives in Las Poyuas, Zacapa. The finca grows coffee and has some forest apparently set aside by the Instituto Nacional de Bosques (INAB). We walked uphill through pasture for ~10 min and got to the edge of what seemed to be primary forest with some big broadleaf trees and lots of bromeliads, very much like at La Union, Zacapa. We searched in bromeliads from ~15:30-17:00 and got 2 B. rubescens and 2 juvenile B. criniti, as well as a species of snake from a bromeliad that we couldn't identify. This seems like an ideal area to look for Crystallaria marginis. I walked uphill to ~1450m or 1500m where there was some short, thin bamboo and more bromeliads. We ran out of time and had to leave, but hope to return here in the future for the joint MVZ-MUSHNAT trip.
