Octepaque, Depto. Octepaque, Honduras
Sept.5 We talked to Bob more this morning and he told us about a reptile with 2 legs, stubby toes and a tongue that it flicks out, which he occasionally sees on his property. His description almost exactly matches Bipes. I would dismiss it, but Carlos Alvaranga at PN Cusucro told me the same story. Bob promised to save us are if he found any.
We drove back to the high point on the road from Santa Rosa de Copan to Nueva Octepaque. Scouted out sites, then the worthless Pathfinder got stuck on a tiny hill on a slick gravel/dirt road. Some very helpful people from the town there (El Portillo) helped us get it out in the rain and cold; it took 2 hrs and 2 pickup trucks. We had dinner in Nueva Octepaque and got a hotel room. Went back up to the pass and searched from 21:00-23:15 along the road through the Reserva Biológica Liisayote. I got an adult female Thoraps sleeping on vegetation. We had planned to drive along this road to some better forest, but didn't want to risk it in our car. We weren't in very good habitat and didn't see any salamanders - very disappointing; it was very rainy, cold and miserable. We got a llama on the road back to town.
