Sept. 3 PN Cuscatlan, Depto. Cortes, Honduras
We woke up and saw 4 quetzals, including a male, next to the visitors center in the pine forest - fabulous! We searched in bromeliads in the pine forest in a final effort to get a Cryptallus, but only got 1 B. conanti in about 4.5 hrs of searching. We drove down to San Pedro Sula, returned the rented Montero for the 4WD Les Pathfinder at the airport, and drove to Segucigalpa, where we are supposed to give talks tomorrow at the Universidad El Zamorano. There was some confusion over our room reservations at the university, and we drove back to Segucigalpa to spend the night.
Sept. 4 Lago de Moyog, Depto. Santa Barbara, Honduras
Hurricane Felix, a category 5 hurricane, hit Nicaragua last night and is headed directly for Segucigalpa, so our talks were cancelled. We briefly met with Franklin Castaneda to get our export permit and then drove in a heavy rain to the Lago de Moyog. We drove to Pena Blanca and then south to the D&D Brewery, recommended to us by Larry Wilson. The owner, Bob, was very friendly, and got us permission to look on a nearby cardomin + flower finca, Compania Agricola Paradise. We searched from 20:30-21:30 and I got a big female B. mexicana on an epiphyte leaf in a palm tree and a Smilisca grandinii. We drove around + heard and saw tons more Smiliscas and a small hybrid on the road. We searched on the D&B brewery grounds for ~30 min and I got a Linitia diodonata.
