Chrys Creek, Chrys NF and Great Falls Basin, Chrys G; CA (cont).
I released all salamanders except the adult female (SMR98)
under rocks where they were found. We hiked back out and
Sean & I left to do more Sierra fieldwork while I drove
to Bridgerest to met Ted Paperjuss. In the evening, we
drove to the spring at the bottom of Great Falls Basin
where a Batrachoseps was once seen by an entomologist. The
spring emerges from a crack in the rock and flows down
a rocky wall into a pool. It looked like good salamander
habitat above but it wasn't possible to climb up the
spring; I collected a black beetle for Sean at the base of
the spring (35.85521°N, 117.38172°W [WGS84, 10m acc.], 850m elev).
We hiked up and around to an area well above the spring,
but couldn't see any areas with water that were accessible.
We left and drove back to Bridgerest at 9 PM. We caught a
small Crataus cerastes on the road between Trona and
Bridgerest (35.69017°N, 117.38311°W [WGS84, 10m acc.], 568m elev.)
and a dead C. cerastes a little further along the road
(35.64642°N, 117.51546°W [WGS84, 10m acc.], 649m elev.). We
collected both and returned to Bridgerest.
