Cnyrs Creek, Cnyrs National Forest and Great Falls Basin,
Cnyrs Cr., CA
June 15 Sean Schorille and cl parked at Lone Pine campground and
walked up along Cnyrs Creek to about 6500 ft. We dropped
into the creek bed at 6450 ft and started flipping rocks and
logs along the stream, amid aspen trees in shaded canyon habitat.
At the point where the stream becomes an impassible waterfall
and the rock walls form a steep narrow canyon, Sean found a
juvenile H. platycephalus under a large rock in the sun next to
the stream on sandy soil. We searched under rocks from this
point up to the waterfall (a few meters) and found a total
of 6 juveniles, 2 subadults and one adult H. platycephalus. cl
collected the adult (SMR98) (36.57099°N, 118.20110°W [WGS84,
20m acc.), 1980m elev.). We searched the area around 12:30 PM
for about 15 min. to find the salamanders. There were excellent-looking
mossy areas along the waterfall, but only the first was accessible;
cl searched it and found nothing. We got the following swab samples:
