Ravito, Sean 2007 Journal July 8 Sixty Lake Basin, Kings Canyon NP, Fresno Co., CA (cont.) After waiting at the bottom of the road and watching many cars go up and a few come down, I decided to drive up. The fire had completely burned the area between Dray's Meadow and upper Onion Valley. A Forest Service guy stopped me near the top, reprimanded me for driving through, and told me I was now stuck at the top. I hiked into 60 Lake Basin, which took me longer than usual. On Shortt Pass, between Allen Pass and the SE end of 60 Lake Basin, I saw 6 adult Sierra bighorn sheep - the first clive ever seen. Today, I walked over to the waterfall SE of Mt. Clarence King and searched for H. platycephalus from 11:30-12:30. I found 11 adults and 4 juveniles, all under rocks close to the stream or waterfall. The habitat is much drier than at this time last year; only areas right next to the stream or in the spray of the waterfall were wet. All but 2 salamanders were along the stream above the waterfall. There is no snow above the waterfall, either - almost no snow anywhere in the basin right now. I collected the 10 largest adults (SMR259-268), which will be the type series if I describe the southern lineage as a distinct species. The GPS at the top of the waterfall is 36.82752 N, 118.43613 W [WGS84, 5m acc.], 3314 m elev. I was going to search this area by night, but since I already found enough salamanders I spent the rest of the day relaxing and reading.
