Smith Lake, Basatin Wilderness, Eldorado NF, Eldorado Co., CA
c hiked in to Smith Lake at night to collect H. platycephalus for my physiology experiments. c searched on the east side of the lake from approx. 9-10PM and found 10 adults and 1 subadult. c took 5 adults (5ml Phys 1-5), which c will release here when c'm done. There were only 2 patches of snow in the seep area and the habitat was quite dry.

Donora Pass, Stanislaus National Forest, Tuolumne Co., CA
c hiked out of Smith Lake in the morning and drove to Donora Pass to complete my physiology sample. The habitat along the road at the 7000' level was almost totally dry, and c saw only 1 subadult H. platycephalus. c walked long the trail to the cascode where c collected swales in 2005. c searched for about 30 min and found 1 adult, 3 subadults and 2 juveniles. c kept the adult and 1 subadult (5 phys 4+5). c then drove to Bishop, where c camped. lightning fires closed 395 south of Big Pine - hope it opens tomorrow.

Dirty Lake Basin, Kings Canyon NF, Fresno Co., CA
The east side of the Sierra Nevada from Jaboose Creek to Onion Valley is on fire. The biggest fire seems to be at Oak Creek - c hope the salamanders at Charlie Canyon are OK - they should be underground by now. Yesterday, Onion Valley Rd. was closed because of the fire.
