Coban and Purulha, Apto., Alta and Baja Verapaz, Guatemala
Sept. 14
Yesterday, we drove from El Remate, Peten to Coban, which took most of the day. We then attempted to find a cafetal called Finca Canaan, 13.5km S of Coban, where B. boliviensis had been collected in the past. We could not find this finca, and no one knew where it was. We didn't see any cafetales with red bananas in the area, so we drove NE out of Coban past San Pedro Carcha for about an hour into a coffee and oak-growing area. We didn't find any red bananas to search before dark, so we searched a few roadside roadbanks; I found only 1 Amilisia grandinii.
This morning, we drove to Purulha and went SE out of [illegible] town over Puente El Arco towards a coffee growing area. Once again, we found no red bananas to search. We passed through cloud forest and opened about 8 great looking bromeliads but found nothing. The slopes on both sides had what looked like virgin cloud forest - would be good to return here with more time. We drove back to Guatemala City to meet Carlos and pack for our flight tomorrow morning.
