Honts, Dec 2006 Journal Sept. 2 Hontse'e and San Juan Chamula, Chiapas, Mexico (cont.) ... to the TV towers on top of Cerro Hontse'e, Antonio had collected B. rustiata here under logs in the past. We searched with flashlights on the roadbanks from about 1950-2050 but found nothing (16.73786°N, 92.68782°W [WGS84], 10m asc.), 2674m elar.). The trunks didn't have many good cracks and were rather dry despite the light rain. This site is probably best searched by day. We drove down and spent the night in San Cristobal. Sept. 3 Berrigabal, Chiapas, Mexico We drove to Finca Huitze'e from San Cristobal and then on Hwy 190 to Ocozocoautla. We went 27km from the town towards Palapas to find an area where Ted had found B. mexicana in bananas. We found only small green banana trees in the area and didn't find anything in ~20min of searching. We then drove back to Berrigabal and went ~12km N of town to the end of a dirt road at El Pozo de Petateras. We looked in a few green banana trees nearby but found nothing. At dusk, we went to El Pozo de Petateras to look for chlorotica niger. We searched in the forest from 1945-2045 but found nothing (16.86197°N, 93.32191°W [WGS84], 13m asc.), 1114m elar.). They have only been seen in winter (Dec/Jan) and the area seemed somewhat dry despite a light mist. There are still many large trees with buttresses, though, so the habitat seems intact. We will have to return in the winter.
