Rivito, Sean 2006 Journal Finca Santa Julia and Finca la Cusula, San Marcos, Dept. San Marcos, Guatemala Aug. 25 Yesterday we left Guatemala City at 1300 and drove to Tecpan, Dept. Chimaltenango. Dave and Marvilee Wake stayed below the town and searched for salamanders while Gabriela Parra, Carlos Nasquez, Antonio Munoz, Ted Papenfuss and I drove to the microwave towers on top of Cerro Tecpan. We searched on top of the mountain in logs under rocks and in roadbanks from 1655-1800 but found only Doloprygus and Mesapigia marcelot. Conditions seemed fairly good for salamanders - it was much wetter than last year, if still a little dry. (GPS: 14.78461°N, 91.02238°W [WGS84, 6m acc.], 2977m elev.) We met Dave and Marvilee at the bottom and drove to San Marcos. This morning, we drove from San Marcos to Finca Santa Julia, near San Rafael Piedra de la Cuesta. We went to the coffee compost area and dug with potato rakes for 30 min, looking for Dermophis, but found nothing. We hired 6 finca workers to dig in the compost, and Carlos stayed with them. They dug from 1300-1430 and found 3 adult and 1 juvenile D. mexicanus, as well as 3 Geophis macalis (14.92711°N, 91.90362°W [WGS84, 10m acc.], 1083m elev.). Gabriela and the Wakes went to the nearby Finca El Lapote, where they found 3 Bolitoglossa occidentalis under banana leaves while the men were digging for cacalinos (14.9267°N, 91.9115°W, 1040m elev.).
