Plants, Deer 2006 Journal Sierra July 24 July Lake, John Muir Wilderness, Sierra National Forest, Fresno Co., CA cl started up from the McAfee Pass trailhead at 11AM and hiked to McAfee Pass. cl saw 2 Bufo singing in meadow habitat on the trail above McAfee Creek. A rather severe thunderstorm hit me as cl hiked over the pass, with hail and lightning. cl caged in a clump of pine trees on the flat area on the west side of the Pass. It stopped raining at 19:15 and cl hiked over to the salamander site NE of July Lake. cl found my data logger intact, downloaded the data at 19:53 and pulled it. cl started searching the seep habitat at 19:55 by flipping rocks and then continued with a light after dark. There was plenty of water in the seep and cl found 2 juveniles out around 21:00. cl then found an adult female, whose head was partly crushed by a rock as cl tried to catch her. The salamander was severely injured, so cl collected it (SMR14). cl then found 2 adults on the right (east) side of the habitat in clumps of yellow Minulus. cl stopped searching at 21:52 and got luminal and ventral swabs from the 4 salamanders cl found (excluding the injured one). Swab # | Age class/sex | Photo | Fluid TL7 | Adult male | 1030121 | B,V TL8 | Adult male | 1030122 | TL9 | Juvenile | 1030124 | TL10 | Juvenile | 1030126 | The relative humidity was 84% when the salamanders were found.
