Rastro, Dean 2006 Journal July 19 Franklin Lakes, Sequoia National Park, Tulare Co., CA I hiked back over Farewell Gap and then up to Franklin Lakes. Dean Shinkle collected dorsal and ventral swab samples from 8 H. platycephalus at this site earlier this year. I went to the same site he did; a large seep zone just above the trail on the north side of the lower lake. Many of the seeps were mostly dry, but some were still wet or even flowing. Vegetation was limited to a lot of moss, lilies, grasses and a few small shrubs and scattered pines. I started searching at 1250 and found a juvenile salamander at 1308. I quickly found another under a mossy rock and collected both (SMR139+140: 36.42204N, 118.55690W [UTGS84; 8 m az.], 3256m ele). I also collected a bottle from here for Dean. I searched all wet seeps in the area until 1410 and found 3 more juveniles that were too small to swab. I could see other seeps on the south side of the lake as well as much higher up towards Franklin Pass. I hiked down and was hit by thunderstorms from about 1500-1600; the weather had been warm and partly cloudy.
