July 5
Dirty Lake Basin, Kings Canyon National Park, Fresno Co. and
Charlie Canyon, Inyo Co. CA
In the morning, I walked to my data logger on the way to
Hardiner Basin. I offloaded and pulled out the logger at 0932.
I briefly searched for salamanders in the surrounding seeps, but
didn't find any. It looked like Sean and Nance had flipped
most of the rocks the previous evening. I hiked out over
Shawn and Kearsing Passes back to Onion Valley. It was cloudy
on the hike but didn't rain. I drove from Onion Valley to
Charlie Canyon and searched the habitat for ~20 min. I found
1 adult and one subadult N. platycephalus under rocks below the
overhang. I then found 2 juveniles beneath a log next to the
stream and a subadult under a rock next to the stream
on the other side. Finally, I found another subadult under a
lava rock outside the overhang (didn't swab this one). I took
the following swab samples:
Swab # Age class/sex Photo Kind
ChC11 subadult 1030075 B,V
ChC12 subadult 1030076 ↓
ChC13 adult ♀ 1030077
I offloaded and pulled out my data logger at 1936.
The evening was warmer and cloudy.
