August 10 Yosemite National Park, Mariposa Co., CA
I was going to climb Half Dome today but instead decided
to rest (very tired after last night) and recharge my headlamp.
I drove up to Glacier Point to look at it since Stebbins found
a salamander there in 1951, but it was far too dry now to find one.
I decided this would probably be the case with Half Dome too, so
I decided to save it for next year. I drove to Sequoia and camped
at Mineral King.
August 11 Sawtooth Pass, Sequoia National Park, Fresno Co., CA
I climbed up to Sawtooth Pass from Mineral King to
investigate a report from David Holder of Hydromantes at
Clumbine Lake. I stopped above the parking lot to look at
some great waterfall habitat and collect Plebisc for Sean D.
(36°27'20.4"N, 118°35'07.2"W (NAD27, 7m), 2508m).
Didn't see any salamanders but there wasn't much to flip. Hiked
on a very steep and hard trail up to the pass and I saw that
almost all the seeps around the lake were dry. There was a very
tiny wet area on the south side but I decided it was not
worth walking to since even it didn't look like it had much
water. The rest of the Great Western Divide looked dry too
from what I could see, so I gave up and headed back to
the car. I found a rubber frog (Charina bottae) at the
place where the trail crosses Monarch Creek (GPS location given
above) - it was crawling among pebbles next to the stream. The
weather today was sunny and in the 80s.
