along the Merced River on Highway 140,
Mariposa Co, CA
January 21 Fed Paperfuss and I went to Sweetwater Creek
to find H. burnus. We searched the seeps along the
road and the rock along the creek thoroughly for
2 1/2 hours but found no Hydromantes. The habitat
looked ideal, especially along the creek. I collected
an Erythrina and two Batrachoseps (out of a total
of 7 I saw). We checked a number of other seeps
along 140 almost up to the turnoff for a geological
exhibit but found no more salamanders. We drove
to the type locality and I found one adult
H. burnus at about 10:15PM, I tried to take
a buccal swab, which was a dismal failure, so I
settled for a skin swab from its ventral side.
Finally, we looked around at the bridge where 140
crosses Bear Creek, where Stelling collected two
H. burnus, but the habitat seemed off and we
didn't see anything in about 10 minutes of searching.
