beginning of the Great Basin habitat. Going south on the 5 we immediately came into the Mt. Shasta area - there is still plenty of snow on the middle and upper reaches of the mountain. We turned east on the A12 and then North on 97 to Ball Mtn. road then came to the Shafter campground on Old State Rd. There are several houses just southwest of the campground. These are some of the largest houses, 4-5 ft. tall, that I have seen. They are also particular free-standing and like in Lone Pine, I see no Quercus anywhere nearby. We drove South on Old State Rd and set in various locations dominated by Pine and Juniper. These houses, too, are free standing and large - many pine cones are incorporated in each house.
