Marloa 1965 Nyctea scandiaca Sharply rising polygonal mounds ca. 4 ft x 3 ft.. Mound has thin coating of recent snow. ♀ left when I was c.a. 100 m+ away, did not return until 200 m. beyond. 23 May Nest now has 6 eggs. 2 pairs on Beach Ridge between micro-met and c&68. 4 owl-killed lemmings lying on mounds - 2 on one mound, 1 ca. 50 ft. away, 1 ca. 100 ft. away. Others seen occasionally along ridge. Remains of 3 dinners seen - once just back half of lemming eaten, once all but in testes, once just about all! 26 May Conditions essentially unchanged. Nest now has 7 eggs. 28 May Observed courtship at E. end of gasoline ridge. ♂ flying over in very "bumpy" flight shooting. Came down on mound and gave dracula display w/ tail cocked. Rotated slowly (ca. 1 rev./10 sec.) while in this position. ♀ didn't seem too impressed, but watched me.
