P. fulicarius
together; killed one and found 4th
egg in oviduct! Another ♀ on ground
within 50 m. of 2 others, no ♂ in
sight - also about to lay 4th egg,
a ♀ killed by eskimo kids - 4th egg in
oviduct. Speculation: (1) Maybe there is
something to this synchrony; and (2) -
♀♂ begin to associate before clutches
are complete. Interesting.
22 June
Density inland is about as coastal-
certainly no greater. Saw pairs and
small groups of ♀♂ feeding actively.
Collected a ♀ w/ 4th egg in oviduct, a
complete ♀, and a winter plumage
neuter (could fino no gonad). Interesting
to speculate on migratory flight of neuter,
in absence of (gonadal) hormone stimulation-
probably just followed the group. Stomach
of this bird contains 339 small
Chironomis larvae.
Also found a ♂ in attendance
on a 2 egg nest at South End of
S. Footprint Lake. This completes the
story: ♂♂ in attendance on incomplete
cleutches; ♀♂ associating before laying
is complete. These birds are really
wierd.
