Maclean 1967 himnodromas scolopaceus 30 July the first bird of the year - a single immature jabbing along edge of pond at Tanglefoot site I. Bird was occupying a pond with 2 melanoty, and flew with these when startled. 14 August The absence seems worthy of note. None in Central Marsh or Holmes' Morass. 15 August Spoke too soon. Tom brought one bird in from a flock in Central Marsh. In the afternoon drove into Herawik - saw several individuals, a group of 3, and a group of 5. 16 August Again - birds were present near FAA and also across Family Creek. 17 August Still none in Central Marsh or along W side of Holmes' Morass. 18 August Several groups flying actively about area around lines III A-B. 19 August Very abundant in mossy ponds from camp to Browerville. Many birds in the area, they are all in turnera, not coastal, ponds - an important separation. They make use of the long beak- jab-jab-jab-probe-jab-probe - ca. 3-4 motion see. 20 August Again - many birds around FAA, but hard to see in tall grass and poor light. Finally took one on the wing
