30 July
the first bird of the year - a single
immature jabbing along edge of pond at
Tanglefoot site I. Bird was occupying a
pond with 2 melanoty, and flew with
these when startled.
14 August
The absence seems worthy of note.
None in Central Marsh or Holmes' Morass.
15 August
Spoke too soon. Tom brought one
bird in from a flock in Central Marsh.
In the afternoon drove into Herawik -
saw several individuals, a group of 3, and
a group of 5.
16 August
Again - birds were present near
FAA and also across Family Creek.
17 August
Still none in Central Marsh or
along W side of Holmes' Morass.
18 August
Several groups flying actively
about area around lines III A-B.
19 August
Very abundant in mossy ponds
from camp to Browerville. Many
birds in the area, they are all in
turnera, not coastal, ponds - an important
separation. They make use of the long beak-
jab-jab-jab-probe-jab-probe - ca. 3-4 motion
see.
20 August
Again - many birds around FAA,
but hard to see in tall grass and poor
light. Finally took one on the wing
