11:30 A.M. - 3 birds feeding in wet marsh
10 ft. from observer. 1 - raises wing display
raised and "waves" one wing, turning body
nearly 90°, so that wing going straight out
at 11. Continues ca. 6 sec. repeated.
1 chased short distance by observer,
reciprocated. Per gave aggressive batter-up
posture.
10:00 P.M. At least 5 birds on birch
bough - min. 3♂♂. Wing raising display,
wing touching display - stands nearly upright,
stretches wings out in front of body, bolo tips
ca. ½" apart, occasionally level tips;
tail spread. Make "clicking"
sound.
While feeding sometimes hop up' i.e.5
ft... (challenge announcement display.) When
this is done, other birds often flies over - assume
aggressive posture - bodies horizontal, head and
neck extended. Square off - short fight
(3-5 sec) then both fly back straight up,
lands hanging down. Fly up 15-35 ft.
come down separate or resume feeding
or together and repeat. Entire process
silent.
