C. alpina
[11 June] population is simply not dense enough to
generate much display.
12 June Visited the Vott-Village Ridge region -
but recently exposed. Very poor! Found
a 1 egg alpina nest - peculiar - I saw
a bird that looked as if it might be off
a nest - followed it onto the nest. When
flushed it gave a trill - i.e. the o7 - but
only 1 egg in the nest. It is curious that
the o7 was so attentive to a 1 egg nest.
Don't see the f. A bird, probably the o7,
later displayed very well, but otherwise
birds are widely spaced and displaying
v. little.
Pitelka collected 2 (separately) near
cake-eater.
13 June Pitelka found a 3-egg nest on his
plot. Most birds seem to be incubating
now. Display is still here, but sparsely.
18 June Very calm now - birds quietly incubating.
Nesting density is low - few nests are
popping up by flushing of incubating bird.
21 June Nest near trapline I on Gasline
Ridge is empty. About 50 m. from the
empty cup 2o7o7 engaged in aggressive dispute
on the ground, involving 'battering ram'
behavior. Probably o7 from the empty
nest and an adjacent o7.
