20 June
In poney, low polygonal grounds
West of Cake eater, saw flock of 6
birds, both ?♂ + ?♀, on the grounds
feeding. Early for this. Too much was
going on at that moment for me to get
an accurate count of sexes. Birds, when
flushed, flew ca. 100 m. as a ± coherent
group, then resumed feeding. Heard a
few displays, but display activity has
obviously fallen off.
22 June
In walking entire length of
Holmes' Heron walk plot - scored up
no more than 5 birds. We have
reached the quiet time of the year
for this species, however, there
were probably more there. My impression
from the entire in land trip was
that they are scarcer than in past
seasons. We only found 1 nest - that
by watching; didn't turn up a single
one in driving. Will have to return
in better weather to check these
observations.
Nest found on low marsh between
lake and Holmes plot - 7 incubating,
Egg was 11.9, 10.1, 11.7, 11.1 grams,
17-20 mm embryos; probably >10 days
along (saved embryos).
