C. melanotus
6.
29 June
there is a large flock of 877 in
Central Marsh and adjacent parts of
Beach Ridge. Display activity has
essentially ceased.
1 July
Collected 3 877 from the above
flock - now largely on Beach Ridge.
Adult insect flights is just beginning it
will be interesting to see if their stomachs
contain adults - especially tipulidae, which
were not evident to us in this area today.
The birds - SN 10 , 10 , 10 - have
greatly reduced cervical fat, and 2 of
the 3 have begun to molt. The breeding
season is declared finis.
In the evening Dave looked for the
above flock and found it gone.
2 July
All 877 pre-fledglings have left the
area. Found none in Central Marsh,
Beach Ridge, or along the Gaswell Road as
far as the north end of Footprint Lake.
3 July
Went all the way down the
Gaswell Road, and finally found 1 bird
just North of Footprint Lake, and a flock
of ca. 10 + scattered individuals on
Footprint itself. Certainly not very many
for this time and place. The 877 that I
collected were heavier than those of 1 July -
but these represent a special sub-sample:
