C. melanotus
5.
(25 June) chased by at least 7♂. After ca. 1 minute
3 birds came in and dropped out of sight
in the trough where the nest was located.
the ♀ went immediately to the nest, and we
only saw 2♂. the ♀ may have been helped
by 1♂ who acted like her mate. Collected
the ♀ (SII ) and the 4 eggs - weights:
8.8, 9.4, 9.7, and 8.0 g. - obviously well along.
26 June
A third nest - east of AACS - found by
Hawes in the morning. We went out and
harvested it in the afternoon. The first
time we approached the ♀ left and flew
c.a. 150 m. away. From there she was chased
by a ♂ even farther. We returned in 15
minutes, and this time she only went
about 40 m. that was her mistake: SII
the eggs were real whoppers: 14.7, 14.1,
14.7, and 14.9 grams!
Many ♂ still around AACS meadows
and Beach Ridge, but not much display
activity.
In the evening we watched a ♀ closely
attended and displayed over by a ♂ near
Micro-Met. She fed continually for the 20
minutes we watched. My guess is an
incomplete clutch.
27 June
On footprint lake - many birds -
mostly ♂.
