C. melanostris
30 June
Collected 2♂♂ (928, 929) from a flock
of ca. 50 birds in Central Marsh.
1 July
Snow fell today, and most of the flocking
birds seem to have departed. Don't blame
'em. Did manage to collect one ♂ (930) from
10 in a flock in Central Marsh. This bird was
the heaviest of the year - 107% g not injected.
Actually, there are still more flocking
birds around than I thought yesterday. Perhaps
a 50 % reduction over 2 days ago.
3 July
Found flocking birds common along the
Gaswell Road - feeding not on the grass, but
in troughs and at pond edges. Took samples where they were and where they
weren't. The former had things - esp. Pionocera,
the latter didn't. Damn clever, these pectorals.
The ♀ (940) had a fresh-looking b.p. and no
molt; 4 of the 5 ♂♂ were actively molting.
Still birds in those same areas along the
Gaswell Road.

8 July
A very tight flock of >100 birds in Central
Marsh. A random collection of 6 birds (2 shots)
produced 5♂♂ and 1 ♀. All of the ♂♂ were molting,
but not the ♀.
11 July
A flock of ca. 15 dispersed in Holmes' Morass,
but more in Central Marsh.
