C. melanocephalus
22 June) close together, with little interaction. Collected
whar looked like a ♂ (SU 906), but is probably a
first-year ♂ with little throat development.
In the evening drove out to II-III, then I-II on
Gasoline Ridge. In both places it was the same:
many birds perching on flooded flats (East of II-III,
No. of Gasoline) - I could have collected 3-5w
perching observations until my pencil wore down. These
birds showed only occasional interaction. Additionally,
at each site a smaller number of ♂s were off on
slightly more elevated land suitable for nesting
involved in active chasing and display. These appear
to be setting up territories. In both cases these
birds appeared bolder; in no case was a small
first-year bird involved in this activity. I collected
one of these territorially inclined birds near
Gasoline - SU 907. This is the heaviest bird collected
to date - 106.9 g. Also collected 2 birds from flocks
for comparison - SU 908, 9, [illegible] these were also
over 100 g.
23 June the situation is about the same -
many birds at the same places - some
acting as if territorially inclined. Shot
a territorial ♂ that displayed over a ♀ -
I think this - by the west end of line X.
this bird - SU 910 - was the lightest taken
to date: 107.7 g. Also took 2 more from
a flock - SU 911, 912: much lighter.
