Maclean 1968 C. melanotos 10 June) acting territorial - resting on a small mound, then displaying over a very large area. Collected this, too - 8H 881. It weighed 94.4g - more, but still very light. 2 June Just across Wohlslag - found a pair - ♂ supervising an actively feeding ♀. Collected both - 8H 885, 886. ♂ - 100.0 g. Later took another ♂ that was settled, but not displaying, and no ♀. This one - ♂ 887 - very light - 88.2g. Birds on Elson Bluffs were acting as if dispersing - some chasing about and hooting, but no evident boundaries, and no ♀♀ in sight. This kind of behaviour, however, comes cheap to the pectoral. 13 June Looking still more encouraging. territorial bulls by the N. end of III A and again No. 8 of IV A; others scattered regularly around the area. 15 June The snow turned to slush today. On a slightly raised portion of Central Marsh (i.e. - S.E. and S.W. today) found a loose group of 25 to 30 birds, including ca. 10 ♀♀. Birds were feeding - mainly along the edge of the deeper water, although this was not a true pond and there was no apparent difference in vegetation, etc. of the feeding sites.
