Maclean 1967 C. melanotos 3. [14 June] has just opened up - it will be interesting to see if the birds remain. Some display- several chases involving the 'garle' Note and some booming. In the evening a similar group 8. of N.B.S. 18 June Saw a flock of ca. 12 o'♂♂ East of Gasline Road between Voth Slough Crossing and Footprint Lake. Birds were feeding in wet marsh and pond edge. Collected 2 (SM 720; 721.). Spent most of the day around the polygonized area East of Footprint Lake. There ♂♂ were common - spread out and territorial. Much chasing and frequent display. ♀♀ were scarce - most that I managed to flush were quickly displayed over and/or chased. None of those flushed appeared to be coming off of nests. 1 ♀ stood feeding, then a pair of alpine began copulation ca. 40 m. away. ♀ melanotos flew over, landed '12 m. away, and watched the entire proceedings. ♀ peotoral, of all birds, should not be hurting for a little sexual stimulation! Collected this ♀ (SM 718): ova to 5 mm and incubation patches just
