C. melanotos
16 June
At Meade River - there were
widely, if sparsely, distributed and
hoots were regularly heard. Distribution
is about as expected - wet marshy
stuff is essential, at least in part
of territory. Birds found on Paul's
census plot use pond basins to
feed - fool over tussocks displaying,
also feed in wet Carex between
tussocks. Very hard to observe under
these conditions. Population is
enough for habitat comparison, but
insufficient for sustained collecting
for stomachs.
20 June
Spent entire afternoon searching
goos pectoral habitat between Voth
Area and Village Ridge and finally
found one pair. ♂ even hooted
at her once. They are sticking
close, and are probably breeding.
Obviously, this - this is not a pectoral
year.
In the afternoon evening, over
Gasline Ridge, 2 ♂♂ chased a ♀
with good flight "gargle" noise. Couldn't
find any on the ground.
21 June
Across Voth Creek - saw 4 ♂♂
and 1 ♀. ♀ was harassed by 2
