MacLean 1968 Calioris bairdii 8 May Unless surfbirds also have a baird- like rattle note, heard bairdii this afternoon. 9 May Saw and heard more bairdii today. they are widely spaced along the ridges. Lots of short display bouts with rattle note, but no sustained display. 22 May Saw a flock of 7 feeding in a wet gravel pit beside Steese Highway ca. mile 32. 23 May More birds and more display activity than previously, while other shorebirds seemed down. 26 May Birds are now extremely numerous along the ridges and upland terraces. they were displaying very actively today. Saw both pairs and small groups of up to 5. At least here low densities in the mountains can not be blamed for Dixon's daim that they are silent on the breeding grounds. 28 May More of the same. Birds are largely paired. there is a fair amount of display, but pairs are spaced out so that there is little interaction between pairs. Still some small groups moving in the area.
