13 June near Micro Mer. also saw a clade of 3
birds here.
14 June Hedra goose display over ooth creek
and saw clade.
1 of displaying rights over Broaderville
in the evening.
15 June Were very active in the drum area.
Saw 2 nest cup displays, on either side of
phone line, ca. 100 m. apart. May have been
same or different pair. First time - ♂
dropped into cup when ♀ was near. He
remained, scraping and dipping, ca. 30 sec,
then ♀ got in for ca. 10-15 sec. Afterwards
simply resumed feeding. Soon after - ♂
and ♀ were feeding, with ♂ intermittently
calling and wing flashing. Worked apart in
feeding; when ca. 12 m. apart, ♂ dropped
into cup and called while scraping. ♀,
obviously attracted, came over and
replaced ♂ in cup. Then ♀ exited and,
without any additional apparent precursor,
attempted copulation occurred next to
cup. Copulation did not appear to be
successful. Birds then separated and
resumed feeding. Other pairs were
active in Drum area - at least 6 pairs.
I made no attempt to census, since
Karl should have this information.
