MacLean 1967 C. pusillus 10 melanotos around ponds South of Snikpuk - apparently all immature. Collection 5-81704, 5,6,7,8. Birds were working over bare mud areas - pick or very shallow jab. Another flock of 80 or so was along the road in Central Marsh. Still more - c.a. 30 - in the pond behind Shootip station. 6-8 August None as Umiit. 9 August About 20 birds at Shootip Station, remaining apart from large flock of alpina. Watched these feed - motion was essentially very shallow jab - about 2 mm, directed rapidly in series to the substrate. The prey is not found by visual clues. Pattern of bill marks in mud shows complete and regular coverage of the area. Some part of the larva must come close to the mud to become visible. Still - they are noticeably utilizing a different stratum than alpina feeding by jabbing to c.a. 20 mm. in the same areas. 10 August A few pusillus, feeding as 5, in coastal type ponds at Nuvuk. 11 August About 40 in a flock by reefer- row ponds at So. Drum Area. Another (presumably - although those were gone when I drove in) flock of 18 feeding
