Maclean 1964 Calipatus pugillus 2. 11 June (cont) Less musical trill. Came to within 15 ft. Drove away intruder from west (to near water line). I were persistent in trill than other. Wait a minute - this is another pair. Walked towards west - ♀ flew off, ♂ displayed. Found SP2 - 4 eggs ca. 100 yrs. W. of SP1, 50 ft S of corner of old hut. Marked with ax. This pair - possible precopulatory ? behavior. One bird approaches other - tail 45° up, 1 wing up and quivering. Now both wings up. Other bird facing. Touches bills. Neutral bird flew 5 ft. away; other ended display. Two birds - both with wings up - quivering. Fighting - pecking with bills. Cont. 15 sec - 1 flew away - other short display. 12 June Raised wing ground display N. of E-most AACS block. Birds flew ca. 30 ft. - repeated. No apparent response from neutral birds. 13 June Much activity in Marzel between Row and Fresh Lake. Display - motor boat..... glide. More MB than glide. Length of MB variable - 2 - 20 sec. Glide ca. 2 sec.. No sound during glide. Trill appears to be same as wing beat. Connection? Chases nearly constant, involving 3 or 4 birds. I never involved. At least 3 displaying at once. Often chase, 1 drop out and display, then rejoin chase. Impossible
