Aphriza virgata
(17)
28 May) go back. Come back again later and
worker area NW of Steese Highway. Found
a pair of birds by the edge of a snowfield
on the NW side of the hill NW of the
Highway at the Summit. These were
sitting quietly, occasionally feeding very close
together (<1 m.). When I shot 1
bird fell - the other jumped, but remained
in the same spot until I shot it, too.
In hand the size dimorphism is
marked. The smaller bird, the ♂, also has
more red on the back, brighter yellow legs,
and heavier spotting on the breast and
sides. The ♂ weighed 146.5g; the ♀ - 193.4g.
The ♀ had ova to 17mm (approx. - it was
slightly damaged by shot), followed by 8,6,
and 5mm., i.e., she was getting ready to
ovulate the first ovum in a day or so.
There was no sign of defeathering of
an incubation patch in either bird.
