(23 May) Listening without sign of surfbirds.
24 May Again drove up to Eagle Summit in the
afternoon but failed to hear surfbirds.
John thebige encounters are along the
road as he was driving up from Fairbanks
today. (No recorder, Damn it!)
25 May Walked around So. side of Puzzlement
Hill at Eagle Summit and encountered two
surfbirds, closely associated, on the South side
of the hill ca. 1/2 way up. They were on a
typical rocky Dryas (and occasional Cassiope tetragona)
slope, still partly covered by the recent
snow. They were on the lee side—partly
protected from the mean NE wind that was
blowing cold. Watched these 10 minutes—they
fed actively, eating frequently. Feeding was very
calorine-like—rapid series of jabs into slightly
raised vegetation patches, with occasional tossing
aside of vegetation, as in turnstones. After
10 min flew about 120 m. around hill towards
SE—I followed. Fed there amidst small
snow patches ca. 20 min, then flew up hill
over a small ledge and out of sight. I
followed and encountered 2 birds below the
small crest where I had seen the birds
disappear. ‘Hmmm,’ sez I, ‘they must have
circled back a little before landing’, and
I settled down to watch them feed.
