Maclaurin 1968 23 May) that the birds were standing quietly, but I would have expected to hear cause some alarm notes if this were so. Started out at 4:00 a.m. and didn't see a surf bird until 7:55. That was a lone bird on a ridge leaving NE from Mastodon Dome. Gave alarm note, then a brief je-jew sequence. Finally Flew out over adjacent canyon in very long glide, giving occasional alarm note, then disappeared around hill ca. 1/4 mi. away. 10:10 - found 2 birds sitting quietly on East face of Center Hill - ca. 2 m. apart. 1 of these (appeared slightly larger than other) giving alarm note in sequences of 3 and 4; other bird preening. 10:15 - both suddenly fly around hill toward So, ca. 100 m. I follow - they fly c. 300 m. more, and higher on hill - now on So. side, near top. Followed, but failed to find them. This appears to be the same "pair" seen here in previous trips to the hill. Note - saw and heard no display today and covered much territory to find only 3 birds. It would appear that birds have left the area as a result of bad conditions, i.e. snow- covered ground. It is unclear that golden plains have done so. In the afternoon - around 4:00 - drove up to Eagle Summit and spent ca. 45 min.
