MacLean 1968 (11) Aphriza virgate 20 May) Swoops v. low over much of slope, then lands. Immediately another bird rises from ca. 100 m. downslope - displays - disappeared around the slope. So... again the ground display involves >2 birds, and there is no real sign of territoriality. And I still don't have a shotgun with shells to match, damnit! Much less aerial display today - as yesterday. This rapid shut down is more puzzlement. Jerry saw 4 birds ± together on the ground on the back (SE) side of Candal Hill - where I saw 2 birds yesterday. He saw they weren't doing anything - just sitting quietly (ca.5:30 a.m.) 21 May Went around Center Hill in cold, very windy weather - saw none. Sandy Kogl reported seeing two birds together - sitting quietly until flushed - on the slope SW of Puzzlement Hill. 22 May Ca. mile 32 of State Highway - saw 1 bird on the road. Bird was quite tame. Noticed that the undertail coverts of this bird were conspicuously spotted, not white. This relates to the behavior seen 20 May. 23 May The local population seems to be down following our snowstorm.
