Aphriza virgata
20 May) showing light under covers - leans way
forward - sticks ass in other bird's face.
No response. Quivers slightly, then
relaxes. 3rd bird ca. 1 m. away ignores all
this. Displayer (1) wanders away feeding.
2 follows loosely, feeding. Birds go behind
sm. rock - emerge with 1 bird jajew'up.
I think this is 2 - bird just postured
towards ( I think 1 - posturer - is sl. smaller).
3 sits quietly several minutes, then wanders
toward others, feeding. All out of sights as
I take notes. All 3 suddenly fly away low
over ground - less intense than yesterday's
"chase". two birds (2+3?) giving
jew, jajew... I think 1 - not vocalizing -
was leading.
6:45 One bird displays overhead
7:30 One bird on same slope gave
slight ja jew, then nothing,
7:46 flew across snow field to ridge
c. 150 m. away.
7:50 Now gone. Didn't see it leave.
8:10 Bird displaying up over this area.
fl ew until out of range of binoculars -
c. 1/2 mile across canyon and over
another ridge. this area now
apparently vacant.
8:22 A bird comes in high, displaying.
