MacLean 1968 (8) (19 May) Immediately occurred out of sight behind some rocks. When the birds became visible 2 fights were simultaneously going on within 12 feet of each other. The birds then broke off into 2 different "chases". I followed the more active of these. The other birds continued to enter the activity only occasionally. At this same time there was another bird sitting (literally) quite quietly above my right shoulder, and possibly a 6th bird over my left shoulder. Occasionally the ground activity would lead to a brief battle, followed by more chasing. I heard wing tips slapping on a number of occasions. This whole scene went on all around me for ca. 1/2 hour. Suddenly the two more active birds decided to go up into the air to display. The other birds also went up. I could not tell if both of the active 'combatants' were displaying, since there were several (at least 3) birds displaying simultaneously. The aerial displaying went on for ca. 7 min., then the birds disappeared around the south corner of the hill. I waited 45 minutes for them to return, but they never did. Now - figure that one out! A shot -
