MacLean 1968 (5) (18 May) from where I first saw it displaying, took the following sequence of notes: 1:35 P.M. Begin. Bird sat quietly on rock for 10 minutes. About once / 2 min. gave quiet series of ca. 5 baird notes. 1:45 Suddenly perked up noticeably although I noticed no external cause. Flew out over canyon West of saddle. Gave series of white-rump notes: 2 (jewit) - 4 (ja-jew) - flap - baird note - w-r notes - disappeared against background of hill about 1/4 mile away. 1:55 Found bird ca. 200 m. from ↑ - probably same. Bird rose and gave series of w-r notes, then settled. Gave occasional series of baird notes (ca. 5 / series - lasting 3 seconds). Some feeding. When 5th longspur flew very close and landed 1 m. away surfbird leaned forward and jewit · 3 (ja-jew). longspur wasn't impressed. Gave sequence of 5 baird notes + 5 ja jews from ground. 3 b. notes + jew ja jew · 2 (ja jew) Noticed spasmodic throat movement in). 2:13 flew : jew 5 (ja jew), landed c.a. 150 m. away, back toward 1:35 location.
