DuVal, E.H. 2005 Journal Isla Boca Brava, Chiriqui, Panama 12 May 2005 [cont] with legs in the air, already stiff. Could the highland Micanis have killed him? It's true that I never saw manakins eating this fruit, and I just assumed it would be ok because of the common genus + similar fruit to Boca Brava Micania. He had lost weight (10.5g at death, and he was 11g 6 days ago), and so it's also possible that he wasn't getting enough to eat. When I dissected him, however, a small line of fat was clear in the furculum, and his breast muscle seemed well-developed. His skull was ossified only at the base near the occipital condyle. The rest of the brain case was a transparent back layer of bone that could be (clean single bone layer) -ossified occipital condyle easily dented and then re-formed with your finger. I stayed up until 1:30 am prepping the skin, which (as usual) is not strong, Julian claimed personal attachment and couldn't do the prep, though he's much more experienced than me. The organs + tissues all looked fine - I'm not sure why he died.
